Adolfo Camarillo’s Legacy
In his 94 years of life, Adolfo Camarillo carved out a powerful personal legacy that can still be observed by residents of Ventura County today. He was a landowner and innovative businessman who successfully operated a major agricultural enterprise for nearly 80 years. A seemingly tireless servant of his community, Adolfo joined and led a variety of agricultural, financial, educational, spiritual, and social organizations. He was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a friend known for his warm hospitality and generosity. As a sign of respect, he was addressed as “Don Adolfo,” and has come to be known in local history as the Last Spanish Don of Ventura County.

The fascinating history of the property dates back some 300 years when the vast expanse of land surrounding the Santa Monica Mountains was part of the original Spanish Land Grant. The 200,000-acre site is a perfect spot for raising sheep and cattle. Up until the 1930s the area was known as El Malibu.
Local caves are still covered with pictographs painted by the Chumash Indians, which date back to the Portola Expedition of 1769. These pictographs have become very rare due to erosion and weathering, but some of the most well preserved examples remain on the Saddlerock Ranch property and have been studied by archeologists and photographed for books.
Today the ranch is home to Malibu Family Wine’s offices, four wedding and event locations, 100 acres of vines, a host of exotic animals (zebra, camel, giraffe, llama, alpaca, yak, highland cow, etc.…), Malibu Wine Safari tours, and the Semler family!
Malibu Wine Safaris offers various tours of the ranch, which include interaction with some of the animals as well as wine tastings at some of the ranch’s most stunning vistas.

The Santa Barbara Woman’s Club was founded in 1892 for the purpose of enriching the cultural, civic, and social interests of its members. Meetings were held in downtown Santa Barbara, but as the Club’s popularity grew, the membership soon outgrew the location.
In 1927, the current property in Mission Canyon was purchased. Originally the home of the Rockwood Inn, the property hosted a secluded hotel until a fire broke out, destroying the original building. Our organization purchased the three acre property and hired a local architectural firm to design a new Clubhouse. The building was named “Rockwood.”
“Rockwood” has a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival style, complete with stucco walls, open beams, and a red tile roof. Many of our guests comment that our Clubhouse has a wonderful Santa Barbara look and feel.
Our members continue to meet, and the Santa Barbara Woman’s Club is now a social organization that meets regularly, offering our members luncheon and afternoon teas that include speakers and entertainment, as well as book clubs, bridge, Mah Jongg, yoga, and other activities.
We welcome guests to our events, and we encourage local ladies to join our organization. Please contact our office administrator about our schedule of activities and membership details.
